Bauer Wins PEN New England AwardLiterature faculty member Doug Bauer has won the 2014 PEN New England Award for nonfiction for his latest book, What Happens Next? Matters of Life and Death. Bauer’s poignant collection of essays weaves the stories of his own and his parents’ lives, the meals they ate, the work and rewards and regrets that defined them, and the inevitable betrayal by their bodies as they aged.

Woods: Forest Canopies Protect Species Ecology faculty member Kerry Woods contributed to a study finding that forests with dense canopies create a microclimate that protects a variety of vulnerable plant species from warming air temperatures. The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, was picked up by several media outlets, including BBC News.
