MFA in Music

The MFA in Music at Bennington College offers an adventurous and self-directed educational experience where students are encouraged to explore the diverse landscape of music creation and performance while integrating insights from other artistic and academic fields. This flexible program allows students to pursue their interests—whether in composition, performance, ethnomusicology, or sound practices, to name a few—while also venturing into new areas of discovery.

We seek applicants who already have an established artistic practice, as their experience forms a strong foundation for advanced study. Throughout the program, students develop their artistry and gain valuable teaching experience by planning and leading courses, as well as assisting faculty. One-on-one mentorship with faculty members, who are both experienced educators and practicing artists, provides personalized guidance tailored to each student’s goals. The program emphasizes hands-on, experiential learning, encouraging students to experiment, collaborate, and showcase their work in various contexts. Students in the MFA in Music program have the opportunity to push the boundaries of their craft and make meaningful contributions to the field of music.
