Brooke Awarded Bogliasco Fellowship
While on sabbatical, Music faculty member Nick Brooke has been a Fellow at the Bogliasco Foundation in Liguria, Italy.
During his fellowship as the Aaron Copland Bogliasco Special Fellow in Music, Brooke is working on a new album, from which "Variations" is excerpted below.
Additionally, Brooke is working on an evening-length piece for 6 voices and sampling/electronics.This new piece, 12 Transcendental Etudes, uses Brooke's typical mash-up of samples, sound design, physical theater, and words—in the style of other pieces Brooke has created at Bennington and venues such as MASS MoCA.
12 Transcendental Etudes weaves together sound collages with physical theater. Performers imitate a maquette of recordings, creating a gestural vocabulary in lock-step with samples. The piece riffs on etudes, piano pieces intended for learners, but sometimes only playable by virtuosi, and looks at listeners’ ability to transcend the technologies—microphones and ubiquitous recordings—that envelop them, while using familiar pop and recorded sources.
