The Faculty

During each residency and writing term, students work closely with one selected teacher. Our core faculty comprises writers who have distinguished themselves in their teaching as well as on the page. Their collective achievement is seen in the shelves and shelves of their published books. It is also reflected in their many literary honors, which include—to name a few—the National Book Critics Circle Award, the National Medal of Arts, the Rea Award for the Short Story, the PEN/Malamud Award, the Walt Whitman Award, the O. Henry Prize, the PEN Hemingway Award, the Whiting Writer’s Award, and the L.A. Times Book Prize. Core faculty members have appeared on innumerable best-seller lists; they publish regularly in the most prestigious magazines; they have received grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Foundation, the N.E.A., and the Library of Congress, among others. Yet every faculty writer has confirmed and re-confirmed a passion for the workshop and the one-on-one engagement that is the heart of the instruction. A student-faculty ratio of five to one assures that the closest attention will be paid to each writer’s work. The passion is sustained, the focus honed.
