CANCELED | Diedrick Brackens (b. 1989) is a textile artist. His practice and materials engage deeply with history, through a combination of African, American, and European weaving techniques, and his emphasis on the use of cotton, in part for “its historical significance in the U.S. relative to enslavement, violence and subjugation has had lasting effects on black bodies.” His work is a coalescence of representation and abstraction, taking on qualities of assemblage and collage. Brackens received a BFA from the University of North Texas, Denton in 2011, and an MFA from California College of the Arts in 2014. His work has been exhibited at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Hammer Museum, and the Contemporary Jewish Museum, among others. He is the 2018 recipient of the Studio Museum in Harlem’s Joyce Alexander Wein Prize. Brackens currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
