OPEN TO THE PUBLIC | The United States operates the world’s largest immigration detention system. In 2016 (the most recent available figures), nearly 360,000 people were detained, awaiting resolution of their immigration status or deportation. Most of these people are detained by Immigration and Customs Enforce (ICE) in county jails and or private (for profit) prisons. Those detained in these inadequate and frequently inhumane conditions include asylum seekers, and include children, pregnant women, and the seriously ill. Since 2003, more than 180 people have died in ICE custody.
