Walker MFAW '03 Interviews Mattison
Alice Mattison, award-winning author and core faculty of the MFA Program, was interviewed by Sarai Walker MFA '03 in The Center for Fiction on "looking like a writer," and her new non-fiction guide for authors, The Kite and the String.
Mattison explained that she "wrote The Kite and the String for writers who, like me, approach the blank page both as people trying to figure out how something is done, and, simultaneously, as vulnerable human beings."
She explained the central metaphor of her text:
...we have to be as free, when we write, as a kite in the wind, but we need a string if we’re ultimately to make sense and be intelligible to readers.
Sarai Walker graduated Bennington MFAW in 2003. Her 2015 novel, Dietland, received positive reviews from NPR and The Cut.
