Barry Bartlett creates ceramic sculptures that take on questions of conflict, evolution, warfare, suburban sprawl, kitsch, and commemoration.

Biography

Bartlett’s narrative sculptures in ceramic and mixed media explore the realm of socio-psychological conflicts, from evolution to warfare to suburban sprawl. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States, including four solo shows since 2008 and a series of group shows throughout the United States, including the Islip Art Museum on Long Island and Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York. He has participated in national and international artist residencies and lectured in Portugal, the Dominican Republic, and England. He is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in visual arts. He has also served on two advisory boards, for the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Maine and for Greenwich House Center for Ceramics in New York. Bartlett has a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and a MFA from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics. He taught at Bennington for the 1982–83 academic year and returned from 1987 to 2021.
