Susan Crile makes politically charged paintings dealing with issues such as the abuses of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay and the BP oil spill. Her work has been collected by institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Her work has been subject of more than 50 solo exhibitions at venues such as the Museo di Roma, the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, and the St. Louis Museum of Art.

Crile has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Study Center, and the American Academy in Rome. She has lectured all over the United States and Europe, and has taught at Princeton University, Sarah Lawrence College, and Barnard College, among others. She has been on the faculty of Hunter College, CUNY, since 1982.
