Zimba Helps Define K-12 Math Standards
Faculty member Jason Zimba is one of three co-authors of the recently unveiled "Common Core State Standards for Mathematics," part of a major educational initiative to develop consistent K-12 academic standards across America.
"The Common Core State Standards Initiative is one of the most important developments in American education in the past 20 years," said Zimba. "For the first time, states have come together to draft content standards for English, Language Arts, and Mathematics."
Zimba worked with nearly 100 national experts in mathematics, education, and cognitive science in the development of the standards, which have been adopted by 30 U.S. states and counting since being released in early June.
"It has been amazing - and exhausting - to be at the center of this," Zimba said. "Writing the standards is the most difficult thing I've ever done, both intellectually and in terms of stamina."
