Susan Scarf Merrell's Shirley Gets All-Star Cast
Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid's Tale) and Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me By Your Name) have been cast in the feature film Shirley, adapted from the novel by Susan Scarf Merrell MFA '09.
Josephine Decker is slated to direct Shirley, which is scheduled to begin filming this summer.
Merrell’s 2014 novel tells the story of a young couple that moves in with Jackson (Moss) and her professor husband, Stanley Hyman (Stuhlbarg), in the hopes of starting a new life. Instead, they find themselves fodder for a psycho-drama that inspires Jackson’s next major novel.
Shirley Jackson’s husband, Stanley Edgar Hyman, was a Bennington College faculty member, and she was an occasional guest lecturer. She lived in North Bennington from 1945 until her death.
