Student, Alum Consult on DUI Bill
Roi Karlinsky '17 and Ben Simpson '12 researched alternatives to Vermont's current DUI laws, and testified based on that research for bill H.560, which proposes alternatives Vermont's current DUI policies.
Through their research, which was completed during the summer of 2015, and Field Work Term 2016, Karlinsky and Simpson found that Ignition Interlocking Devices (IID's)—devices that require the driver to pass a breathalyzer test in order for the vehicle to start—"demonstrated effectiveness in reducing drunk driving" while also allowing those with DUIs to drive when necessary. This alternative to the traditional punishment of revoking licenses is intended to lessen the potential for recidivism.
The two testified to "the efficacy of IID's" as the preferred alternative. H.560 passed in the House.
