Rethorst '74 wins $75,000 Alpert Award in Dance
Choreographer and performer Susan Rethorst '74 is one of five artists to receive the 2010 Alpert Award in the Arts, a $75,000 prize to support her ongoing work in contemporary dance.
The annual award provides unrestricted grants to artists working in the fields of dance, film/video, music, theater, and visual art.
"The dance panel is honoring Susan Rethorst for her rich gestural vocabulary, compelling formalism, and ongoing commitment to making brave, beautiful, vulnerable work," the judges said in a statement.
Sponsored by the Herb Alpert Foundation and California Institute of the Arts, the Alpert Award "rewards creative experimenters who are challenging and transforming art, their respective disciplines, and society. The awards also provide vital financial support to each artist at a key juncture in his or her creative development."
