Renowned Book Artist to Open Fall Season at Usdan Gallery
An exhibition of artist books by renowned publisher and book artist Gunnar Kaldewey opens with a reception on Tuesday, September 19, at 6:30-7:30 PM in Usdan Gallery. The exhibition, Gunnar Kaldewey Artist Books 2011-2017 marks the opening of the 2017-18 season.
Since the foundation of the Kaldewey Press in Poestenkill, New York, in 1985, Gunnar A. Kaldewey has produced seventy-five artist books. Very few presses have existed for such a long time and produced such a large body of work: the Kaldewey Press has become one of the leading presses for contemporary artist books with numerous exhibitions worldwide. The exquisite bibliophilic books in small editions are realized in cooperation with artists such as Mischa Kuball, Jonathan Lasker, Heribert C. Ottersbach, Richard Tuttle, and Not Vital. Among the authors are famous writers from all countries and periods, from Lao Tsu and Ovid to Samuel Beckett and Paul Celan.
“Kaldewey has long experimented with the many aspects of the book as an art object, and I find that these myriad approaches reflect the interdisciplinary nature of programs at the College; they represent the rich depth of inquiry students are engaged in during their time at Bennington,” said faculty member and organizer Thorsten Dennerline.
The exhibition will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 1:00 to 5:00 PM, through October 18. Admission is free.
