CAPA: A New Chapter Begins
A $20-million, state-of-the-art, green academic facility for a progressive new model of liberal arts education is officially open at Bennington College.
Beginning this fall, the recently completed Center for the Advancement of Public Action (CAPA), designed by internationally renowned architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, will house Bennington's new citizenship curriculum, which invites students to study the world's most pressing problems, and to make that the focus of their academic work.
"With this new Center," Bennington President Elizabeth Coleman said at a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, "we make crystal clear our aim to ensure our graduates are capable of and committed to effective action in the world about matters of great human concern. Simply put, today we mark a new chapter in this College's unbridled belief in the power of the individual to transform possibilities."
CAPA is a complex of three, geothermally heated buildings, each clad in reclaimed Vermont marble, totaling 15,000 square feet. The Center houses classrooms, seminar and conference spaces, lounges, kitchen facilities, and suite-style living accommodations for visiting lecturers and fellows.
