Brazelton Wins Prestigious Composition Prize
Faculty member Kitty Brazelton was awarded the 12th annual Carl von Ossietzky Composition Prize by the University of Oldenburg for her setting of Psalm 104 for mixed choir, percussion, and organ.
Brazelton writes: "After Sandy's damage to my New York City neighborhood I translated Psalm 104 and set it to music last fall, fascinated by its millennia-ancient, possibly even Egyptian, prayer for human safety from the fury of nature. The violent beauty of our precarious existence on this earth connects us to our cousins in the 14th c. BCE, across time, culture, war, everything."
Another verse that Brazelton recently set to music is the “Serenity Prayer,” which is performed by the Bennington Vocal Chamber Ensemble, under the direction of faculty member Tom Bogdan.
