Bennington to Host Young Writers Institute
The Governor’s Institutes of Vermont has selected Bennington as home to its newest Institute. The Young Writers Institute at Bennington College, to be held June 19-25 in conjunction with the Bennington Masters of Fine Art in writing, will host 20-25 writers of high school age who will hone their craft, develop critical and collaborative skills, and be inspired by writers teaching at one of the country’s most prestigious low-residency MFA programs.
This new initiative will allow select Bennington Writing Seminars students to gain teaching experience by serving as Teaching Fellows and Assistant Fellows during their graduate term. Bennington MFA alumni will serve as faculty members and participants will benefit from being on campus during residency to attend readings and craft sessions designed specifically for them.
We are honored to have been selected to host a Governor's Institute. Bennington has long been a destination for writers, from high school participants in our Young Writers' Award, to undergraduate and MFA students, to the master writers that come here to teach. We are deeply committed to helping emerging writers to develop, and we welcome the opportunity to help talented young people from Vermont in particular. Mariko Silver
“Bennington custom-built this program to parallel their famous Masters in Fine Arts program for the Governor’s Institutes, and we’re just thrilled that Vermont’s young writers will have this affordable, world-class opportunity right on their doorstep,” said Taylor Mitchell.
The Young Writers Institute is a pre-college program that celebrates creative exploration by exposing high school aged students to world-class writers through readings, workshops, craft sessions, and discussions. The hope is to spark imagination, and inspire further interest in the written word.
