Bennington College Mourns the Passing of Norman Lear
Bennington College joins in mourning the passing of groundbreaking television writer and producer Norman Lear. He passed away on December 5 at the age of 101 at his home in Los Angeles.
Lear was a neighbor, supporter, and a friend of Bennington College since his children attended the College’s Early Childhood Center.
In 2021 Lear gave a painting, The Breakers by Hans Hofmann, to the College. The sale of the painting will establish The Norman & Lyn Lear Scholarship in Social Justice and Activism.
“We remain grateful to Norman for his gift which will generate support for talented students to attend Bennington,” said Bennington College President Laura Walker.
An entertainment legend, Lear also cared deeply about political causes and founded the liberal advocacy organization People for the American Way.
“We offer heartfelt condolences to his wife Lyn, his children, and their families,” Walker said.
