The Gullah Geechee people of the Southern United States have a unique culture that is shaped by diverse factors, including enslavement, relative isolation, and creolization. This presentation is an ethnomusicological analysis of role of music in the Gullah Geechee community. It specifically examines the ways that underlying value systems in the Gullah Geechee community are embedded in and displayed through music. Moreover, this presentation explores the intersections between African and African diasporic musics, by examining the history, function, and performance contexts of Gullah Geechee music.
