OPEN TO THE PUBLIC | Please join us in-person or online for a concert of improvised solo bass by Brandon Lopez followed by a set by the duo LopezLopez featuring Brandon Lopez on acoustic bass and Cecilia Lopez on electronics.
Brandon Lopez is a New York-based Puerto Rican/American musician working at the fringes of jazz, free improvisation, noise and new music. His music has been praised as “brutal” (Chicago Reader) and “relentless” (The New York Times). He’s a frequent collaborator with the luminaries of NY’s avant-garde, including Fred Moten, John Zorn, Sun Ra Arkestra. His trio with Gerald Cleaver and Steve Baczkowski, won best concert of the year 2021 in the NYC Jazz Record for their performance at Vision Festival. In March, the Swiss label INTAKT will release “No Es La Playa”, a document of a co-lead trio with Ingrid Laubrock and Tom Rainey. Brandon Lopez was the Jerome Artist in Resident at Roulette Intermedium in 2019-2020, 2018 Artist-in-Residence at Issue Project Room and 2018 Van Lier Fellow at Roulette Intermedium, Recent highlight performances include opening the 2018–2019 season of the New York Philharmonic as a featured soloist in Ashley Fure’s “Filament” and a number of works with John Zorn, including the Zorn’s 35th anniversary of “Cobra”.
Cecilia Lopez is a composer, musician and multimedia artist from Buenos Aires, Argentina currently based in New York. She works across the media of performance, sound, installation and the creation of sound devices and systems. Lopez holds an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College and an MA from Wesleyan University in composition (2016). Her work has been performed and exhibited at Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires (AR), Center for Contemporary Arts (Vilnius, Lithuania), Roulette Intermedium, Issue Project Room, Ostrava Days Festival 2011 (Ostrava, Czech Republic), MATA Festival 2012, Experimental Intermedia, Fridman Gallery (NY), Kunstnernes Hus (Oslo, Norway) and the XIV Cuenca Biennial, among others. She was a Civitella Ranieri fellow in 2015 and has participated in various international residency programs.In 2019, Lopez curated the intermedia festival Folly Systems coproduced by Roulette Intermedium and Outpost Artists Resources that featured 11 international artists. Collaborators include Carmen Baliero, Aki Onda, Brandon Lopez, John Driscoll, Carrie Schneider and Lars Laumann among others.
COVID Protocol: Online streaming event is free and open to all. Bennington College students, faculty and staff are invited to join this event in person in the Deane Carriage Barn. Guests may also attend in person by arrangement. Bennington College requires that all guests be vaccinated and have the appropriate vaccine booster. To enter into a building on campus, guests are asked to complete a visitor form—ideally 24 hours before their arrival. Visitors who have not completed this form must show their ID & vaccination card before entering any campus buildings. Masking indoors is required in all shared spaces.
