Visual Arts Lecture Series (VALS)—Spring 2025
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC | Cleveland-born Shala Miller works across photography, film, writing, music, and performance as a means of meditating on the conjunction of desire, mourning, pain, and pleasure. Under the moniker Freddie June, they explore voice as a material. Miller’s recent body of work, Genesis, is an extension of their years-long practice of building fictional worlds with an auto-ethnographic root. Shala studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and received their BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Their residencies include Skowhegan, La Selva Film Accelerator, Barcelona, and New York Film Festival Artist’s Academy. Shala’s work is in the collections of The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Ackeroyd Collection among others. In 2023, their solo show Obsidian opened at Lyles & King in NYC.
