Schedule of Events:
11:00 - 11:15 am Welcome Remarks
11:20 am - 12 pm Session 1
What is Marine Geology? The Why and How of Studying Earth’s Seafloor: Making observations and collecting rock samples from the bottom of the ocean is enormously expensive and complicated, which is why we have better maps of Mars than we do of the two thirds of Earth’s surface covered by water. This workshop will cover the rationale for studying the geology of the seafloor and the tools that scientists use to do so. Presented by Tim Schroeder, Geology faculty member.
  Session 2
Student Work Presentation: This session will feature two current Bennington seniors and one recent alum who will present their senior work and discuss how Bennington's flexible Academic Plan allowed them to pursue all of their passions. Specifically, student work in drama, music, STEM, and literature will be featured.
12 - 12:10 pm Break/Lounge Time
12:10 - 12:50 pm Session 3
Solving the Impossible: Participants will explore how Complex Systems Analysis can help to resolve intractable conflicts. This approach focuses on building the communities of the future by working with social and ecological resilience. Presented by Susan Sgorbati, Public Action faculty member.
  Session 4
Content-Based Language Learning: Japanese History and Social Justice Through the Examination of Art: In this workshop the participants will examine 10 famous Japanese paintings and woodblock prints like Hokusai's “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa” in order to explore such questions as: What caused Japan to close its doors to other countries during the Edo Period? What kind of social hierarchy existed in Japan during the Edo period and during the Meiji Period? What is Japan’s influence on Western art such as Impressionism? In this active exploration of Japanese art and social hierarchies, participants will get a glimpse into Bennington's unique approach to teaching languages. Presented by Ikuko Yoshida, Japanese faculty member.
