Maia Vik Villa '15
Maia Vik Villa is a 5th generation Eastside Los Angeleno, most at home between taco trucks & boba tea. They’re a lifelong performer & writer, passionate about sketch comedy, historical grievances, rebirth, and rock’n’roll. They graduated from Bennington College in 2015, with a focus on Identities in Performance. By junior year, they co-founded with BIPOC peers the student network Kalopsia: Check All That Apply, organized around equity and inclusion advocacy. On April 22, 2014, 10 students (including Maia) spoke about experiences reflecting on race/ethnicity, nationality, and identity while experiencing culture shock at Bennington College. The event was a rousing success, with over 200 people in attendance, including Bennington administrators, faculty, and staff.
Today, Maia continues to believe in cultural healing and liberation through creative expression. They've worked with non-profit organizations and theater companies throughout Los Angeles to bring emerging voices to performance art, improv comedy, and storytelling—and are candid about their own experiences with grief and Bipolar Disorder in their own projects. They have performed in productions from Hollywood to Chicago to NYC, but they are most proud of being in a Nahua community since 2017. Relearning one of their tribes’ modern Huasteca Nahuatl dialects has been crucial in living with a balanced Bipolar mind in today's world. Honoring their many identities has empowered Maia to rediscover joy, and they are unashamed to be a Raråmuri, Nahua, y Chicanx artist.
By day, they manage institutional funding to provide arts & athletics mentorship to kids impacted by chronic illness; by evening, they are drag king Vik Floyd, East Los’ prince of sorrow & madness. Coming soon: supernatural comedies with wildly creative artists from home, East Los Vecinas.
