Sue Rees
Sue Rees has exhibited her set designs, animations, installations, and video works worldwide and has worked collaboratively with choreographers, directors, and musicians in the United States, Europe, and India.
Biography
Rees has exhibited her installations, animations and video works worldwide and has worked collaboratively with choreographers, directors, and musicians in the United States, Europe, and India. In particular, theater productions in New York City of 13P, NAATCO, The Flea Theatre, Dixon Place, HEAR, Talking Band, and Clubbed Thumb, and regionally at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Cold Spring, New York, as well as their Education and Community Outreach Touring Shakespeare Program and at kinDeRdEuTsCh, San Francisco. She has been documenting the Kattaikkuttu Theatre, Kanchipuram, India since 2002 and designed animations for The Milky Ocean, Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai, India.
In 1989, she received a Bessie award for her Creach/Company scenic design and was nominated for the Hewes Design Award for Jabu by Elizabeth Swados in 2005. Rees has attended residencies at the Irish Museum of Modern Art; Yaddo (5 times); AFAA (funded), Pontoise, France; SAFE-Dalfsen, the Netherlands; Orchard Project with The Talking Band; and Eugenio Barba’s Odin Teatret Denmark with kInDeRdEuTsCh projects, among others. She has received grants and commissions from numerous sources, including a Senior Fulbright Research grant in 2001 and second one in 2016; a USIS grant for a residency in Uganda; a Bemis Foundation grant; Vermont Arts Council grants in collaboration with the NEA; and a commission from Freedom & Unity: The Vermont Movie for a short documentary.
