Paul Matteson
Paul Matteson MFA '07 was an associate professor in the School of Dance at the University of the Arts. He is a BESSIE Award performer. His collaborative work with Jennifer Nugent recently premiered at New York Live Arts. He was a member of the internationally touring Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. He is currently pursuing an MDiv degree at Naropa University with a focus on hospital chaplaincy.
Biography
Matteson was an associate professor in the School of Dance at the University of the Arts. His research explores methods for generating inventive personal movement within collaborative choreography. Matteson is also currently pursuing an MDiv degree at Naropa University with a focus on hospital chaplaincy. His evening-length duet with Jennifer Nugent, titled another piece apart, premiered in New York City at New York Live Arts and in Boston at the Dance Complex. He was a member of the internationally touring Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company from 2008 to 2012. He has also worked with David Dorfman Dance, Lisa Race, Terry Creach, Peter Schmitz, Neta Pulvermacher and others. He received a BESSIE award for his body of work as a performer.
Matteson regularly teaches at summer festivals, including the American Dance Festival, the Bates Dance Festival, SALT Dance and Provincial Dance Theater’s Summer School in Yekaterinburg, Russia. He was a faculty member at Amherst College and Mount Holyoke College from 2012 to 2017. During that time, he was a recipient of the Massachusetts Cultural Council Award in choreography. He earned a BA from Middlebury College and an MFA from Bennington College.
Matteson is a visiting faculty member in the BFA in Dance Lab and Low-Residency MFA in Dance program at Bennington for the 2024-2025 academic year.
