Bennington Opens Spring Art Exhibitions

Feb 24, 2009

Bennington College kicked off the spring term with an opening of two art exhibitions on Wednesday, March 4, in the College's Usdan Gallery, VAPA

The Bennington Collects Bennington exhibition features student and alumni work that has been collected by the College or by members of its extended community.

"Bennington has always been a self-perpetuating art exchange," says student curator Edward Ubell '09. "As artists create their work, members of the community acquire it. This practice of collecting-whether it be through gifting, bartering, or outright purchasing of pieces-reflects in the most positive light our tightly knit campus and how we foster the creative minds that exist within it."

Print Exchange, curated by faculty member Thorsten Dennerline, features work by 20 artists who were each asked to produce 20 prints in exchange for a set of prints containing one piece from each artist.

"This kind of exchange portfolio," Dennerline says, "is a common practice for printmakers that takes advantage of the inherent aspect of the print, the multiple, and allows for a democratic exchange of prints between the various artists. At the same time, this practice is an excellent way to create an interchange of ideas among a group of artists."

The exhibitions will remain open to the public during Usdan's normal operating hours until Saturday, March 28. Print Exchange will be presented at the 2009 Southern Graphics Council Conference in Chicago from March 25-29.
