The Best American series is “an annual showcase for the country’s finest short fiction and nonfiction.” Each year, a guest editor chooses the best works in each genre to publish in anthology form. Best American Essays was edited this year by Ariel Levy, New Yorker staff writer, while Best American Short Stories was edited by best-selling author T.C. Boyle.

In addition, a number of alumni and faculty in the MFA in Writing program were included in the “notables” section of both volumes. These included Debra Gwartney MFA ‘06, Lee Hancock MFA ‘12, faculty member Donald Hall, Phillip Lopate (former faculty member), Mara Naselli MFA ‘11, faculty member Lynne Sharon-Schwartz, and Nicola Waldron MFA ‘11.
