OPEN TO THE PUBLIC | Michael McCaughan, Crew Chief: Dept. of Operations, Thomas Jefferson National Acceleration Facility, will be joining us for Science Workshop this week. Snacks Available.

This talk will offer a look at America’s national laboratory system, how it came about, and the growth of the scientific fields associated with its creation—notably high energy and nuclear physics. Focus will be given to the development and growth of particle accelerators, their associated technologies, and their applications both in laboratory and ‘real-world’ settings. Some of the different accelerator design geometries which have been implemented around the world will be examined and some of their strengths and weaknesses will be compared. Spin-off technologies into other fields such as medicine, art authentication and restoration, computing, the space program, agricultural hygiene, and others will also be presented.
