Dear members of the Bennington College community:
As we look to the future, it is hard not to understate the profound impact that President Coleman has had on this institution. Thanks to her courageous leadership, unwavering commitment to the founding values of the College, and her pioneering vision for a liberal arts education, Bennington is stronger than ever. The College has flourished and will continue to flourish by consistently returning to its deepest held principles.
We undertake the search for Bennington’s 10th president from a position of unprecedented institutional health. Enrollment is at its highest levels ever; the College has attracted record levels of philanthropy; its physical campus has been reclaimed, expanded, and renewed; it has launched major programmatic initiatives—its latest, the Center for the Advancement for Public Action, has garnered extraordinary national attention. All of this has happened because of the commitment, imagination, and ambition of this unique community.
Bennington maintains an extraordinary faculty of teacher-practitioners, who bring the vitality of their professional work into the daily lives of their students. It has a gifted staff, all deeply committed to the ideas that animate our College. And while comparatively few in number, Bennington alumni leap into the world with an unparalleled confidence and hunger to make a difference, and what a difference they make.
The Board of Trustees is actively seeking input from all members of the Bennington College community as it embarks on the search for President Coleman’s successor. We will provide a number of opportunities for you to share your thoughts on the qualities and qualifications you believe essential in Bennington’s next president; you may also email your recommendations at any time to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Board of Trustees is in the process of appointing a search committee to be charged with the responsibility of recommending to the Board a superior leader to sustain Bennington’s position on the vanguard of higher education. The Board of Trustees has already engaged Phillips Oppenheim, a leading firm in not-for-profit searches, to assist with recruiting a pool of exceptional candidates for consideration.
I look forward with great enthusiasm to working with the entire Bennington community over the coming months to launch the next chapter of our most remarkable institution.
